Application of Topo-Bathymetric LiDAR for Mapping Nearshore Coastal and Riverine Environments.

Airborne topo-bathymetric (or green wavelength) LiDAR continues to develop as a unique tool for mapping shallow water environments.  Over the past two years a new generation of topo-bathymetric LiDAR sensors has entered the commercial market that offers increased functionality and expanded performance capabilities.  Quantum spatial, Inc. (QSI) has deployed this technology for a variety of clients and applications throughout North America.  In coastal near-shore environments, these data provide extremely valuable information for navigation safety, inundation modeling, and other coastal zone management applications.  In riverine environments, analysis of these data helps our understanding of river channel morphology, benthic habitat, and riparian condition.    In this presentation, we will provide an overview of sensor characteristics and performance as well as lessons learned from deploying these sensors for shallow water mapping projects.
